Summary of the BMAA Trainee Instructor Syllabus

Weeks 3 and 4: Pilot Development Course

During these two weeks Trainees will be introdcued to more advanced piloting skills and theory. It is designed to improve the student's flying ability and knowledge and consists of both Practical and Theorectical training:

Practical

The practical element of the course includes flying with others, advanced cross country flying and navigation, low level precision flying, beach flying, relfex wing practical training and finally advanced ground handling techniques.

Theory

The theoretical element of the course includes equipment training involving engine maintenance and repair, relfex wing theoretical training, advanced navigation and flight planning, advanced wing and accessories information and finally self study on Meteorology and Air Law.

Weeks 5 and 6: Trainee Instructor Development Course

This course in designed to prepare the trainees, who will now be competent and knowledgeable pilots, for the final 2 week Assistant Instructor Course. It is made up of both practical and theoretical training:

Practical

The trainees will be taught how to impart practical knowledge correctly and clearly. Trainees will begin by learning how to correctly explain and demonstrate a procedure followed by having their fellow trainees immiate the procedure and corrcting their mistakes. Trainees will be expected to give clear and thorough explanations, close to perfect demonstrations and then be able to correct their fellow students mistakes without being prompted. Trainees will also shadow and assist the instructors during student training sessions. Particular emphasis will be paid to safety both on the ground and in the air.

Theory

The Trainees will be taught how to impart theoretical knowledge clearly and correctly. Trainees will begin by learning how address a classroom of students and the various techniques and props required as well as information on human limitations and performance. Trainees will deliver a short and basic lecture on a topic of their choice which is unrelated to Paramotoring. They will then plan and deliver one of the week 1 basic lectures on either Theory of Flight, Basic Meteorology or Basic Air Law. Trainees will also shadow the instructors during student theory sessions.

Weeks 7 and 8: Assistant Flying Instructor Course

This course is designed to fine tune the trainee's knowledge and skills and the practical and theoretical instruction in preparation for the 2 day BMAA Assessment. As ever it consists of practical and theoretical training:

Practical

The Trainee's skills in explaining various practical training procedures will be developed and improved as will their skills at demonstrating various practical procedures. Their general flying skills and knowledge will also be scrutinised and improved. The course will also involve various tasks and procedures which the student must perform correctly; such as cross country and limited fuel tasks. Particular emphasis will be paid to safety both on the ground and in the air and the trainee's responsibility towards ensuring safe operating procedures.

Theory

The Trainee's skills in explaining the theoretical elements will be developed and improved. Their general knowledge will also be scrutinised and improved. The course will also involve self study on various topics upon which they will be tested. Trainees will also learn more about the responsibilities of being an instructor and they be interviewed individually in order to assess their personal reasons as to why they wish to become an instructor.

Two Day BMAA Assessment

The assessment will either be run in the UK or Spain and will be arranged by SkySchool on behalf of the trainee. During the two day assessment the Trainee must correctly demonstrate that they have the correct aptitude, ability, knowledge and awareness to become a qualified Assistant Flying Instructor. The assessment will involve both practical and theoretical demonstrations. Upon successful completion of the assessment the trainee will become a fully qualified BMAA Assistant Flying Instructor for Foot Launched Microlights.
